Overseas Study Program FY2022

Period: September11-16

　Due to the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, as in the previous year, our overseas study program this year was conducted online (Teams + Zoom), from September 11 to 16.

　This year’s overseas study program is the tenth time. College of Management, National Chung Hsing University (NCHU, Taichung City, Taiwan) and its affiliated research institute, Cornerstone Center for Academia-Industry Research, undertook the main part of the program, and they also invited two experts from other think tanks, a high-tech park Executive director and two industrialists to give lectures to our students, providing a total of nine lectures.

　Special lectures by representatives of foreign-affiliated companies and professional organizations from Japan and abroad were added before and after the part offered by National Chung Hsing University. A diverse program was realized, including lecture-style lectures, case discussions and real-time discussions with EMBA (Executive MBA) industrialists.

　In the first session of the first day, Prof. Wang Xiaoping, Director of CCBS and Professor of K2BS, briefly reviewed the history of the overseas study program and explained the main objectives of this program, which are to help students improve their cross-cultural communication skills, develop a global mindset and build human relationship networks through strengthening exchanges with major business schools in East Asia. In addition, Prof. Wang also explained how to make effective use of this program. After that, Mr. Masakazu WATANUKI, President of Japan Global Initiative, gave a lecture entitled “Significance and Issues of Human Resource Development for Asian Exchange”. He highlighted the urgency of developing global human resources to cope with international changes, citing his own training program in the United States as an example.

　After the lecture given by Mr. WATANUKI, the following program part was held by National Chung Hsing University. They prepared a welcome ceremony for us, with 26 EMBA alumni and current students from College of Management (NCHU) in attendance. The opening remarks were given by Vice President Fuh-Jyh Jan of NCHU, Dean of College of Management Ying-Jiun Hsieh and Vice Dean Ku-Ho Lin. In response, Prof. Kazunari KUDO, Dean of the K2BS, gave a speech expressing our appreciation. Other lecturers and experts also gave warm words of welcome to our students and faculty, which kicked off the four-day program part.

　After the ceremony, Dr. Shin-Horng CHEN, Director of the International Economic Research Institute, Chung-Hua Institute for Economic Research (CIER), who also serves as Adjunct Prof. of the EMBA, College of Technology Management, Tsinghua University (Hsinchu, Taiwan), gave a lecture entitled “Taiwan’s Digital Economy and Semiconductor Industry Development – Implications for Japan”. Then, Prof. Ku-Ho Lin gave a lecture entitled “Taiwan’s response to Global Supply Chain Restructuring and Taiwan-Japan cooperation strategy”. The two lecturers, each with their expertise and knowledge, provided a comprehensive analysis of the major Structural Changes in East Asia and the industry’s high level of adaptability to these environmental changes from a broad perspective and in an easy-to-understand manner.

　On September 12, the program started with an introductory presentation by the moderator from NCHU, Associate Professor Tzy-Wen Tang. Then, over 40 participants from both sides were divided into two groups for discussion. The discussion was divided into the first half and the second half, with the first half focusing on the topic of “Promoting International Business Cooperation between Taiwanese and Japanese Enterprises” and the second half on “ESG/CSR/SDGs Measures by Enterprises”, both sides had a lively exchange of opinions.

　On September 13, Ms. Hwang-Jen Chang, Vice President of Commerce Development Research Institute (CDRI), and Mr. Ruei-Peng CHEN, the CEO of Zhongxing New Village Regional Revitalization Startup Incubator (ZRSI) in Taichung Science Park, introduced examples of successful government and private sectors for sustainable social development under the title of “The Current Development of ESG Issues in Taiwan” and “Taking Off with Dreams: ZRSI” respectively.

　On September 14, the program included face-to-face online exchanges with Chairmans of two benchmark companies in Taiwan’s industrial sector. The two invited lecturers were Mr. Steven Hong, Chairman of YOKE Industrial Corp, a professional industrial lifting safety hooks manufacturer with 70% of the global market share, and Mr. YC CHENG, Chairman of MOTEX Healthcare Corp, a medical supplies manufacturer, which has become a crucial supplier of anti-epidemic products to countries in need. The two of them shared with us their growth strategies, business models and know- how.

　On September 15, Mr. Wan Tze Bun Gilbert, Executive Director of UOB KAY HIAN (Hong Kong) Holdings Limited, the Hong Kong subsidiary of Singapore’s UOB Bank Group, gave a presentation on “Competition between Hong Kong and Singapore as international financial centers” and introduced the changing environment surrounding them, the current situation and prospect of wealth management based on detailed data and his own experience.

　On September 16, the last day of the oversea program, the lectures were held in Kokura Satellite Campus of K2BS. At first, Mr. Wei Xuejun gave us a lecture, he is the Chairman of GCSOFT JAPAN CO., LTD., a subsidiary of GUOCHUANG Software in JAPAN, which is an affiliated company of the University of Science and Technology of China. Mr. Wei shared his experience cultivated through years of practice, the secrets of business matching with Japanese companies, and offered meaningful suggestions to students on the topic of “Success and Failure in International Strategic Cooperation with Japanese Companies: China-Japan Cooperation in System Development”. In the final part, Prof. Wang Xiaoping, Director of CCBS, comprehensively summarized the entire program within the limited time available, and shared his thoughts and opinions with students. Although the program was held online, the classroom atmosphere was still very lively, as the students actively participated in the Q&A and discussions from the beginning to the end, making the program achieve the same effect as offline lectures.

　As in the previous year, the overseas program was organized by CCBS, and research fellow Ms. Peng Lijun cooperated with the program planning, coordination, and class management. With the joint efforts of all related people, this year’s program was also successfully concluded.
